In this homily on the 1st Sunday after Christmas, The Rev. Janet Richardson, Assistant to the Rector of St. George Episcopal Church, looks at the Gospel of John which is a reflection looking back at the life of Jesus. Rev. Janet compares it to the other gospels and the first five books of the Old Testament. She notes that unlike the other gospelers, John’s Christmas story begins with creation as does the book of Genesis. Through creation God brought order and goodness out of the formless void. God sent his son into a broken world to enlighten all of humanity. If we receive Jesus, as fallen as we are, we become God’s children and heirs to his kingdom. God has built a bridge between Him and us – the bridge is Jesus. We are carriers of God’s love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and compassion to others. People should see Christ in us, and we should practice each of these attributes. Through Jesus we have received grace upon grace, gifts that we have not earned nor deserved . While we will never understand the fullness of God’s love and bountiful grace, we get a glimpse through Jesus and creation. Send comments to musingsonfaith@gmail.
